How Rotary Drum Thickening Works:

By agitating the solids in a slowly-rotating vessel with porous walls, rotary drum thickening effectively increases the sludge solids concentration, resulting in sludge thickening. The principle behind rotary drum thickening is similar to that of a gravity belt thickener, where water drains from the sludge through a retaining porous medium.

In the case of rotary drum thickening, the cylindrical wall of a drum with a diameter ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 meters serves as the porous medium. The sludge continually passes through the rotating drum, which operates at speeds between 5 and 20 RPM.

The porous wall can be fabricated from various materials, including polymers, steel, and ceramics. To prevent the pores from blocking, a spray system is used to clean the drum.

Depending on the sludge source and the conditions employed, rotary drum thickening can achieve solids concentrations up to 9% and corresponding solids recoveries ranging from 90% to 99%. Typically, polymer dosing for conditioning is conducted in a mixing drum upstream of the rotary drum thickening process.
